Inspired Learning Group (ILG) is delighted to announce that Shrewsbury High School, a leading independent school in the heart of Shropshire, will join the ILG family. Currently part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, this strategic acquisition marks another significant milestone in ILG’s growth trajectory and further strengthens its position as a premier operator in the UK’s independent education sector.
Founded in 1885, Shrewsbury High School educates girls aged 4 to 18 and has built a proud legacy of academic excellence, exceptional pastoral care, and a vibrant, close-knit community. Set within the historic Town Walls of Shrewsbury, the school boasts a unique riverside campus spanning nearly five acres, with a striking blend of heritage architecture and modern facilities. Its extensive buildings include state-of-the-art science labs, creative arts studios, a purpose-built sports hall, and inspiring learning spaces that foster ambition, creativity, and resilience, equipping them with the skills to thrive both academically and personally. Students benefit from breathtaking views of the River Severn and direct access to the heart of the town’s cultural life.
Shrewsbury High School is renowned for its outstanding academic results, award-winning performing arts, and a rich programme of extracurricular activities. The school’s commitment to developing confident, well-rounded individuals is reflected in its strong track record of university placements and alumnae who make a positive impact in their chosen fields.
Amit Mehta, Chief Executive of Inspired Learning Group, said:
“Shrewsbury High School is a beacon of educational excellence and community values. We are thrilled to welcome the school into the ILG family. Our commitment is to invest in its future and ensure that every student continues to flourish in a nurturing and ambitious environment.”
Continuity and stability are central to the transition. Head Darren Payne and his senior team will continue to lead the school, overseeing day-to-day operations, curriculum, and admissions. ILG will become the new Governing Board, collaborating closely with legacy governors to provide guidance and support. All teaching and support staff will transfer to ILG, ensuring that students experience uninterrupted learning and care.
Looking ahead, ILG will invest in expanding nursery provision, enhancing facilities, and supporting the school’s ongoing development. These initiatives will be delivered thoughtfully, with clear consultation and ongoing communication with students, staff, families, feeder schools, and the wider Shropshire community to ensure transparency and reassurance throughout the process.
Darren Payne, Head of Shrewsbury High School, said:
“This is an exciting new chapter for our school community. Our priority is to maintain stability and continuity for our students and staff while embracing new opportunities for growth. With ILG’s support, we are confident that Shrewsbury High will continue to thrive, remaining true to our values and heritage.”
Cheryl Giovannoni, Chief Executive of Girls’ Day School Trust, added:
“We are immensely proud of Shrewsbury High School’s legacy and the generations of students who have flourished here. This transition ensures the school is well-positioned to continue its tradition of excellence, while embracing new opportunities as part of the ILG family.”
